A Dry Cleaner from Mexico

In brief

A recently created dry cleaning company in Mexico realized that one of its machines was only working at a third of its total capacity. By analyzing the production process, it became clear that through optimization of machine use, the input materials for dry cleaning could be reduced, thus reducing the generation of toxic materials.

The challenge

Both the company and its machines were new, which meant that efficiency and capacity were not the issues. The only goal was to produce clean cloth on time and to the fullest satisfaction of the client. When analyzing the production process, the manager realized that the machine worked at 75% of its capacity, meaning a greater generation of perchlorethylene sludge and expenditure for cleaning supplies.

Actions taken within the enterprise (after application of the PREMA GHK guide)

Division of all cloth to be washed in a day by color, type of fiber and total capacity of the dry cleaning machine;

Acquisition of containers to allow for separation of clothes;

Use of a log book to determine the used capacity of the machine.

Environmental benefits

Optimizing the capacity of the dry cleaning machine to 85% saves 194 liters of perchlorethylene, thereby reducing the generation of disposable sludge.

Savings of 352 liters of gas, thus reducing CO2 emissions.

Energy savings have been around 665 kWh, reducing the negative environmental effect caused by the generation of electricity.
